Florida inmate enters guilty plea to attempted murder

A Florida inmate who pleaded guilty to attempted murder on Jan. 18 was sentenced to serve 25 years in prison. The inmate, a 45-year-old man, has been serving time in Florida since 2004.

The inmate reportedly stabbed another inmate in 2017 while he was in prison. He was originally scheduled for trial to begin on Jan. 28. Before the man entered his guilty plea, he was set to be released from prison on Nov. 5, 2019.

The man gained notoriety in Rhode Island for the murders of four people in 1989. He stabbed a 39-year-old woman 60 times during the night when he was 15. The man also murdered the woman's 10-year-old daughter an 8-year-old daughter. Two years before that, the man reportedly killed another mother by stabbing her. The people he killed lived a few hundred yards away from his home at the time. The man had already served his time for the murders. However, because he committed new crimes while he was in prison, his time had been extended several times.

People charged with murder or manslaughter might want to seek help from an experienced criminal defense attorney. Cases that involve allegations of violent crimes may be very complex and necessitate the help of a lawyer. Legal counsel could conduct a thorough investigation of the facts and circumstances of what occurred. If necessary, the attorney could locate and interview witnesses and gather mitigating evidence. The lawyer might also file evidentiary motions to try to seek the suppression of some of the evidence against their client. Through negotiations, legal counsel might be able to secure plea agreements to lesser charges or capped sentences.
