On Jan. 4, Florida authorities apprehended a 35-year-old man suspected of killing an elderly Naples woman. The arrest was made in Houston County, Georgia.

According to representatives of the Naples Police Department, the victim, age 78, was found dead in her residence on the 1300 block of Chesapeake Avenue on Jan. 1. After investigating the scene, officers identified the defendant as a suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody by members of the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Task Force and is currently facing a charge of second-degree murder.

Neighbors of the victim told media outlets that she split her time between Naples and Waterloo, Illinois. However, when she was staying at her Florida residence, she lived a quiet life and rarely left home. One neighbor said that she had never seen or heard of the man who is accused of killing her. The neighbor also said that she last saw the victim unpacking her car after she recently returned from a vacation with her son. The investigation is ongoing.

Murder charges can lead to harsh consequences, including long prison terms, heavy fines and a permanent criminal record. In some circumstances, defendants can also be sentenced to death. Because the stakes are so high, many people accused of taking someone’s life seek the help of Orlando, Florida, violent crimes defense lawyers to represent them in court. The lawyers could investigate the case and construct a solid defense against the charges. This defense could help the defendant get the charges dismissed or win an acquittal at trial. It could also be used as leverage to get the charges significantly reduced, which could lead to a more lenient sentence.
