Genetic genealogy leads to arrest in 34-year-old murder

New technologies are leading to the reopening of a Florida cold case from decades ago. In one case involving the murder of a 25-year-old woman in 1984, a man was arrested 35 years later due to DNA testing and the use of genetic genealogy. Pamela Cahanes was found murdered in the Orlando area only two days after her graduation from U.S. Navy basic training. She was found near an abandoned home in an unincorporated area of the state.

Florida woman accused of shooting boyfriend over snoring

A 47-year-old woman was charged with aggravated battery and attempted murder on March 6 after allegedly shooting her boyfriend with a shotgun because he was snoring, according to a report from the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. Reports indicate that the shooting took place in the woman's mobile home on Emerald Lake Drive near Sharpes Lake at approximately 10:20 p.m. After being taken into custody, the woman was transported to the Brevard County Jail where she is being held without bond.

Celebrities charged in admissions scandal

Florida residents may have heard about a scandal involving celebrities paying a consultant to help their kids get into college. Individuals such as Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin are said to have been involved with the scheme. It involved paying the consultant to create false academic records to help their children gain admittance to a variety of schools throughout the country. In some cases, the consultant would send false test scores or bribe officials in exchange for admission.

Former Trump aide sentenced to prison time

Florida residents likely know who Paul Manafort is and have heard of the case against him. The former Trump campaign chairman was sentenced to 47 months in prison on charges of tax and bank fraud. The case was brought by Robert Mueller in connection with a probe into possible misconduct in the 2016 presidential election. In addition to the prison time, Manafort was also ordered to pay a fine of $50,000 as well as $24.8 million in restitution.

Florida sisters charged with murder

Authorities in Pinellas County have arrested two sisters for murdering their own elderly father in 2015. In March of that year, the man had died in a manner that didn't cause authorities to suspect foul play. Because he was an 85-year-old cancer patient, responding paramedics had no problem believing the statements of his daughters, who initially claimed that their father had passed out exhausted after a day trip and died in his sleep.
