Alternative consequences: the drug court program

On Behalf of | Jul 5, 2022 | Drug Crimes

Unfortunately, drug abuse and criminal charges often go hand-in-hand. For some, this creates a cycle from which they struggle to break free. As a result, they may find themselves running afoul of law enforcement and facing serious misdemeanor or felony offenses.

The consequences of an arrest sometimes profoundly affect people’s lives in the present, as well as in the future. However, the drug court program affords some an opportunity to overcome substance abuse struggles and move forward.

Focus of the drug court program

Often, the penalties associated with drug and other criminal charges aim to punish and prevent recidivism. For those struggling with drug use, however, the traditional consequences do not always provide the assistance they need to overcome their issues and avoid future charges. According to the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, the drug court program aims to modify behaviors to stop the cycle of drug abuse and criminal activity. While some still face consequences such as jail time under certain circumstances, the program also offers rewards and incentives for compliance.

Requirements for the drug court program

According to state law, the key tenants of the drug court program include several requirements. Participants must generally refrain from using drugs and, sometimes, drinking alcohol during the program. To ensure this, they will have to submit to frequent testing. Additionally, participants typically take part in education and rehabilitation courses. Further, they must also often attend regular court hearings to ensure their compliance and progress.

When facing drug charges, people may consider the drug court program, as well as their options for getting help and moving past their substance abuse struggles.
